In this post, we will outline some additional design tips for creating an effective billboard. If you haven’t already, be sure to take a look at our original post that discusses essential tips for designing an eye-catching billboard advertisement. This task may seem intimidating. A great billboard will reflect your brand and get your message across in less than seven words. You want to create a display that makes a memorable impression.

Billboards only have three to five seconds to capture people’s attention. Your advertisement needs to have a clear message. It should grab the attention of your audience as well as a call to action. These billboard design tips will help elevate your outdoor advertising campaign.

  • Keep it simple. Less is more when it comes to billboards. Go with one idea. Use shorter, simpler words. People are seeing your billboard ads speeding down a highway. Your audience needs to be able to understand the content and connect the message to your brand.
  • Test your advertisement from a distance. Your billboard will be seen from far away and on the go. Your billboard will not look the same on the computer screen as it will for people quickly passing it by. You should evaluate your advertisement by printing it out and looking at it from different angles and distances. By doing this you are taking a literal step back from the project and making sure your message is clear and your image is understandable.
  • Make your billboard funny and use trending topics in the media. Use subjects people are already talking about to get your brand involved in the conversation. Pick a concept and make it entertaining.
  • Focus your billboards on locals. Know where your billboards are being placed and play off of local sports teams, figures or landmarks. Use local slang or events to boost the connection people feel with your billboard advertisement.
  • Keep it consistent. Design your billboard to fit your overall marketing strategy.  Match your design concept with other advertisements you may have online, in magazines or on TV.  This will ensure your audience will recognize your brand in the few seconds they glance at your billboard.
