Billboards and Music Releases

Billboards are the perfect medium for promoting music artists, album releases, and other things relating to the music industry to a wide variety of people.

In 2013, Clear Channel Outdoor, iHeart Radio, and Target teamed up to promote the release of Justin Timberlake’s album, “The 20/20 Experience”. A digital billboard was erected that featured a live countdown clock. Talk about a genius way to create hype.

Spotify Billboards

The music streaming platform, Spotify, is brilliant at creating simple, yet engaging billboard designs. They use real streaming statistics from their platform and present them in a funny way. Take a look at an example below featuring Kendrick Lamar.

Not only is Spotify promoting their service, they are also engaging with their fanbase, which is a great strategy for fostering customer loyalty.

Minimalism Design

The best billboards are those that take a minimalist approach to their design. In some cases, a single logo and a couple words are enough to get people excited.

This method of design is most effective when you have an established brand that is recognizable by your audience. Take a look at two examples below featuring Drake (Photo via SPIN) and Rolling Stones (Photo via Spectrum News).

Local Artists

Even for a small-time artist, billboards are great for gaining notoriety. Look at the design below which was created by the BillboardsIn art department for rap artist Star2, based in California.

Similar to the movie industry, billboards coincide very well with the world of music. If you’re a musical artist yourself, definitely consider using this form of advertising.
